My favourite home tour this month is one of my favourites of all time. The house, owned by Charlotte and Mark Smith is in Southport CT and was featured on Design Sponge. Charlotte did most of the decorating and has turned an obvious flair into a full time business with her own interiors blog- At Charlotte’s House.

I have to admit that I was a little surprised at how much I loved the design in this house. I always thought that when I finally owned my first home, I would decorate it in a monotone way, mostly white with light wooden furniture. Charlotte has completely changed my way of thinking. She has combined mostly white walls with colourful furniture so that the house has a bright, clean, airy feeling whilst still using colour, art and fun.

I also really liked that Charlotte bought a lot of second hand items and adapted them herself, so that the decor of the house feels within reach, and reminds me to keep an open mind when looking through flea markets or Craigslist.

Favourite room: Absolutely, definitely the living room with the two velvet sofas. The colour palette is soft and vivid, the room feels filled with interesting objects yet not at all cluttered. How has she achieved this magic?!

DIY idea: The floating acrylic frames used to display some of their kids’ paintings above the master bed.

Start saving for: Two velvet sofas! So that’s about £3000/$4000 I need to start saving… £100/$135/month for 30 months?

Design lesson: Keep the walls white or cream and add colour by using bright furniture.
